New Platform Targets Commercial Vehicle Electrification

At IAA Transportation 2026 in Hannover, CATL officially launched TECTRANS II, its next-generation battery platform designed for commercial vehicles.
Akin Li, Executive President of CATL Overseas Business, described commercial vehicle electrification as the "third wave of the global energy transition." He emphasized CATL's intention to work with international partners across products, energy services, and infrastructure ecosystems.

Modular Design Built for Multiple Use Cases

The TECTRANS II platform is built around a modular architecture that adapts to different commercial applications.

Multi Scenario Scalability

By varying the number of standardized battery modules, the platform adjusts to different payload requirements. Configurations support driving ranges up to 1,000 kilometers.

Flexible Vehicle Integration

The system works with both central drive and e-axle vehicle configurations. It also supports seamless switching between plug-in charging and battery swapping.

Standardized Upgradability

Standardized external dimensions, electrical interfaces, and communication protocols allow vehicle platforms to adopt future battery chemistry upgrades without major redesigns.

Faster Development for OEMs

The modular framework enables original equipment manufacturers to cut vehicle development cycles by 50% and reduce R&D expenditures by 60% to 70%.

Total Cost of Ownership Focus

The platform emphasizes efficiency across the full vehicle lifespan.

Lower Upfront Costs

Standardized module design eliminates the need to engineer customized battery packs for every vehicle model, reducing initial investment risks for OEMs.

Energy Density and Payload

Delivering 170 Wh/kg, roughly 13% above the current industry average, the system enables vehicles to carry approximately 0.6 additional tonnes of payload at equivalent battery weight.

Range and Fast Charging

Maximum configurations offer up to 1,000 km of range and support megawatt-level charging. An 80% charge state is achieved in 25 minutes to minimize operational downtime.

System Efficiency

Using a full-tab low-impedance architecture, the battery achieves a 96% system round-trip efficiency to minimize energy loss during daily operations.

Long Service Life

Engineered for heavy-duty truck operations, the battery offers a service life of 12 years or 1.5 million kilometers with a guaranteed 70% capacity retention rate.

Safety and Structural Durability

TECTRANS II incorporates multiple layers of physical and electronic protection for heavy-duty operations.

Hardware Resilience

The battery enclosure features a hot-formed steel top cover rated to withstand 10,000 load cycles from a 180 kg force. The bottom plate is engineered for 1,000 J impact resistance. Extruded-aluminum side structures provide up to 250 kN of lateral crush resistance. The assembly supports 15-year corrosion protection and maintains IPXXB safety standards during high-voltage maintenance.

System Redundancy

A multi-branch independent battery management system allows the pack to isolate a faulty branch while remaining branches continue power delivery. The system also includes proprietary insulation fault-location diagnostics and multi-layer cybersecurity protection compliant with international standard protocols.

What This Means for the Commercial Vehicle Market

Backed by full-vehicle torsion and external fire testing, TECTRANS II represents CATL's latest push to expand high-durability battery technology across the global commercial vehicle market.
For fleet operators and OEMs evaluating lithium ion batteries for heavy-duty applications, the platform signals a shift toward standardized, serviceable, and upgradeable energy storage solutions that reduce long-term operational costs.
As commercial vehicle electrification accelerates, reliable battery energy storage systems will become increasingly critical for fleet reliability and total cost of ownership. The TECTRANS II platform demonstrates how modular design and rigorous safety engineering can support the transition to electric commercial fleets at scale.
